Khalifah as Cosmic Synthesis: A New Vision for Humanity

Humanity stands at a paradoxical moment. Never before has it possessed such unprecedented power to shape the planet, yet never before has it seemed so incapable of sustaining peace with itself, with nature, or with the transcendent order that gives meaning to existence. Contemporary crises—ecological collapse, social fragmentation, and spiritual exhaustion—raise a fundamental question: what does it mean to be human in a world whose future increasingly depends on human action?
This book argues that the Qur'anic concept of khalifah offers a neglected yet urgently relevant answer. Moving beyond conventional readings that frame the human being as God's representative or steward, it reconstructs khalifah as an ontological vocation grounded in the realization of salam—the state of harmony, wholeness, and flourishing invoked repeatedly in Islamic ritual life. Through a deconstructive reading of the final tashahhud, a critical engagement with Fakhr al-Din al-Razi's reflections on vicegerency, and a philosophical synthesis with Mulla Sadra's transcendent wisdom, this chapter develops a vision of humanity as a mediating consciousness whose task is not domination but cosmic integration.
Rather than treating prayer as a private spiritual exercise, this work interprets it as a performative projection of a desired world. The repeated invocation of peace becomes an existential commitment to transform reality itself. In this framework, the human being emerges as the locus where metaphysics becomes ethics, and where ethics becomes responsibility for the future of the planet.
Khalifah as Cosmic Synthesis ultimately proposes a new language for reimagining human agency in the Anthropocene: one in which spiritual consciousness, ecological responsibility, and global solidarity are not separate concerns, but dimensions of a single ontological mission.
